Full probe of Cantu's innocence hits snags
Nearly four months after Bexar County prosecutors
promised to vigorously reinvestigate the questionable execution of Ruben Cantu, they have yet to obtain full statements from the three witnesses who claim he was innocent. All three say they want to cooperate but prosecutors' tactics have intimidated them. Cliff Herberg, first assistant district attorney for Bexar County, did not return repeated calls from the Houston Chronicle about the status of the investigation. In the past, Susan Reed, elected district attorney, has repeatedly promised that her office would conduct a thorough and objective review.

Casteel wants recount in District 73 race
State Rep. Carter Casteel has made up her mind: The 20,307 ballots cast last week in the District 73 Texas House race will be recounted. Because each county’s votes will be reviewed separately, the counting process likely will span several days. Casteel and Macias also are waiting for 94 outstanding overseas ballots from Comal and Gillespie counties.
