Reporter hides after border-cartel story A TV reporter is in hiding after producing a news story that named individuals said to be involved in the disappearances of Americans in Nuevo Laredo, Mexico. "An FBI official in Laredo confirmed the general accuracy of the TV report, which included information about captives being fed to lions."

Developers having their way with "grandfather" task force A task force that is supposed to fix the way developers seek exemptions from city codes is veering toward a policy that "gives away the farm" to developers, a member of the task force claims.

Comal ranch to sprout 1500 houses One of Comal County's largest remaining ranches is set to be developed into its second-largest subdivision. "..a different developer had been in negotiations to purchase the ranch and develop a 6,000-home subdivision there."

Gumby statue pressure reduced "..the city planning director has withdrawn plans to illegally install two granite markers to complement the striking(!) Torch of Friendship sculpture downtown."

BOB HERBERT
Torture, American Style
Any rights Mr. Arar might have thought he had, either as a Canadian citizen or a human being, had been left behind. At times during the trip, Mr. Arar heard the pilots and crew identify themselves in radio communications as members of "the Special Removal Unit." He was being taken, on the orders of the U.S. government, to Syria, where he would be tortured.

Herbert's column is based on the story below:
