Kerry has been slow and ineffective in fighting the damaging Swift Boat Vets ads. Does that mean he would also be slow and ineffective on presidential issues?

Kerry gets lukewarm reception at Legion John Kerry was politely received by the American Legion yesterday, delivering a speech focused on veteran pocketbook issues and President Bush's handling of the war in Iraq without addressing the attacks leveled against him last month by fellow veterans.

Ben Barnes to break silence on "60 Minutes"
The Republican campaign gets ready for shock waves, as the former Texas official who says he pulled strings to get George W. Bush into the Air National Guard finally goes public.

I don't know that there's a "silence" for Barnes to "break" because he has brought this up before and never got much traction.

Cheney calls Kerry unfit Vice President Cheney reached back decades into John F. Kerry's life Wednesday night, arguing that the Democratic presidential nominee has demonstrated through his public statements and votes that he is unfit to be commander in chief in an age of terrorism. Democrat Zell Miller used the same themes to deliver a bristling attack.

Some of us City Employees got together at lunch today. We all agreed that the Mayor mishandled this 'termination' but..... we're damn glad to see MS Terry headed out the door. We also hope that the new City Manager comes from outside the current bureaucracy. The bunch in power now take care of the 'suits' and the Hell with the employees that actually do the work.

email on "COUNTDOWN TO SEPTEMBER 1" below
Brad,
I listen to you every day, I know your style and like it where you try to get both sides of an issue involved in what you are talking about. That is America! However, I must say I am disappointed in your item at the end of your page for the past month or so. It appears that you believe that any threat to this country is being used for pure politics (sic). When it does happen, and we both know it will, then what will the TOP item on your page be? I was WRONG.
Keep the debates going!
Sergeant Major, USA Retired

Dear SGM: If the guards are gone, yeah, I'll suspect politics— but if they're still there, I will believe that the Homeland Security people feel the perceived threat is credible, and I will say so on the air. I don't think I'm wrong to want to know.

FOLLOWUP REPORT IMMINENT
COUNTDOWN TO SEPTEMBER 1

If the intelligence information announced Sunday 8/1

about a Terrorist Threat against 5 financial institutions actually justified placing defenses in public places in New York, Washington DC and Newark, then those guards should still be in place 30 days later, due to the vagueness about when any such attacks might happen.
If the guards are gone by 9/1 (and there has been no new intel to cancel the "attack threat") then I will believe the public measures weren't considered really necessary in the first place.

email on "COUNTDOWN TO SEPTEMBER 1"
Brad,
Re your September 1 countdown, I think you should expand the countdown period to the end of the republican convention. Once all the high rollers are safely back in their bunkers, then I'll bet those guards quietly disappear. I don't put anything past this lying, devious administration as far as manipulating security threats or anything else for their own benefit.
Keep up the good work,
Mike D
