Clean Air meeting citizens' walkout
Disappointed at the failure of even one elected San Antonio or Bexar County official to show up at an AACOG Clean Air meeting, a group of citizens walked out of the public session last night.
Citizens Organized for Good Science founder Mark Langford said, "About 70 percent of the people" walked. "It just seemed pointless to stay there" when no one in power was there to listen. If elected officials such as mayor Ed Garza and county judge Nelson Wolff ever show for a Clean Air meeting, it might be next Wednesday's AACOG Executive Committee session set for 9 a.m. at AACOG headquarters (in the old Tesoro building near Broadway and north Loop 410). Langford suggests the public show up for the "citizens to be heard" session then.
Please call or email our city and county officials regarding how you feel about $40 state vehicle inspections with tailpipe emission testing:

Victoria Claudette cleanup

The paper has been doing an excellent job of reporting, and has been providing a terrific community service.

At 1:20 p.m., executive editor Jim Bishop told me the historic bandstand in the Victoria town square has been destroyed by a fallen tree.

What's wrong with trained pilots having guns?
By sabotaging the armed-pilots program, the Bush TSA is resolutely continuing to undermine the will of the American people and the express determination of the United States Congress.

New Braunfels may privatize trash pickup

Speaking of trash, last week I heard one of our San Antonio city councilmen suggesting that perhaps we should start using big trash containers that could be picked up by grabber trucks, so the city wouldn't have to pay trash men.
I reckon City Hall has a very short institutional memory (term limits!) because about ten years ago, San Antonio carried out a lengthy trial of grabber trucks and couldn't keep them up and running. There were so many pickup-mechanism breakdowns that the automated trash pickup scheme was abandoned. If no one at City Hall remembers that, we may have to squander a few more tons of taxpayer money to repeat the process. Ask Bexar County Commissioner Lyle Larson: he was a councilman then and the trial was in his District 10.

Texas Monthly denies pro-Bush bias
Texas Monthly editor Evan Smith says ... he was just trying to be polite when he offered to edit "bullshit" out of a Q&A with former president George Bush.

Q: Prof. News, why are the news media going negative on the Bush administration's Iraq policy?

When presidential words don't line up
Four months after the US and its allies invaded Iraq, no weapons of mass destruction or elements of a reconstituted weapons program have been discovered there. Deposed President Hussein remains at large. American soldiers are dying every day, and there appears to be no exit strategy.

Usually I clean out the day's headline links between 10 and midnight and load an abbreviated page for overnight. New stuff is normally uploaded between 8 and 10 a.m. and stays all day and evening.
Sometimes I add during the day but only occasionally. Weekends don't get much updating if any at all.
Previous headline links are always available (by month) in the Headline Archive in the left column, or you can keyword search the entire site with the button
