INSIDE THE PALACE
U.S. Army Staff Sgt. Chad Touchett (center) relaxes with comrades from the 7th Infantry Regiment. The Army has set up a mobile command post in the sand-colored building.

--

A California mother whose son is right now in Kuwait poised to
knock Saddam's block off, wrote her son asking how he would feel
if she joined other relatives of service members in an anti-war
demonstration in Hollywood last month. After reading her son's
response, she elected not to participate.

Dear Mom,
It's really your decision to march if you want to or not. You are
the one who has to decide if what we are doing out here is right
or not. My opinion is not yours.
I do, however, have things I would like for you and Grandma and
everyone else at home to know.
I am a United States soldier. I was sworn to defend my country
against all enemies, foreign and domestic. People may not agree
with the things we are ordered to do. I would like to address
those people by telling them that terrorism is not only a threat
to us as Americans, but to many other innocent people in the
world.
What type of country would we be if we didn't defend the rights
and freedoms of others, not because they're Americans, but how
about just because they're human? We live in a country where
people feel secure with their daily lives. They do business like
usual and don't worry about the thought of terrorism actually
happening to them.
The people of 9-11 thought the same thing. We now know that it
can happen to anyone at any time.
Yet as Americans we're afraid of losing our soldiers to defend
our security. I can only speak for myself when I say that my life
is an easy expense to ensure that my family and friends can live
in peace.
I strongly believe in what we are doing and wish you were here to
see for yourselves the honor and privilege that American soldiers
aboard this ship are feeling, knowing that we are going to be a
part of something so strong and so meaningful to the safety of our
loved ones. Then you would know what this potential war is about.
We will stand tall in front of terrorism and defeat it. We as
soldiers are not afraid of what may happen. We are only afraid of
Americans not being able to understand why we are here.
I ask for your courage as Americans to be strong for us; I ask
for your understanding in what we believe is right. I ask for your
support in what we are sworn to do: defend our country and the
life of all.
We will succeed in our task and will end the threat of terrorism
in our backyard. We will also end the threat of terrorism in our
neighbors.
We have to remind ourselves of what this country stands for:
life, liberty and justice for all. In order to maintain those
rights we have to stop the threat of terrorism.
I am proud to be here. I will be coming home, but not until I
know that it's going to be safe for all Americans and for everyone
I love.
My family is first. My country is where they live. I will defend
it.

P.S. Mom, please send this to everyone who has a hard time
understanding why we are here. Ask the paper to put what I've said
in a column so that others will know why we are here and what we
are here for.
I love you all and will be home soon. I left my address so that
if anyone feels like writing to let me know how they feel, they
can.

A big THANK YOU for your sacrifices of time and, in those saddest of cases, of life or limb. We DO appreciate you all. Don't pay any attention to those protestors; they really are in the minority!!!!!!!! I'm proud of the job you're doing and I understand why you are over there. I'm proud of the restraint you are showing and the way you are conducting yourselves. I wish I could write more but this is my office email and I need to be prudent. I hope and pray that you can come home safely in spite of the great risks.

When I see the reactions of the Iraqi people to the sight of the men and
women of the US and Great Britian coming to free them from a evil present in
their country for so many, many yrs I KNOW that this war was the right thing
to do. I knew it when it started and I will know it for the rest of my life.
Never forget the reactions that you see in the people of Iraqi while you are
there...what has been done is right.
Please know that my family supports all of you and wishes the Iraqi people a
better future.
God Bless each and every one of you.

Tie a yellow ribbon round the old oak tree. This means lt to me, I love oak trees. Oak trees have deep roots, grow strong and tall, provide safety and comfort and weather every storm.
I am a proud american wife, mother, sister, daughter and aunt, so what can I do? I have no son over there. My son is safe at home, in college. I found out what I can do. I counted the oak trees in the front of our place and there are 25 of them. I have tied yellow ribbons round each and every one of them. No, I have no one over there right now, but there are alot of mother who do. This is all I can do right now to show my support.
As a mom I want to send my love and appreciantion for all that you have sacrificed to do what you are doing, to do what you believe is right. Come home soon and safe.
luv,
a mom.

To Our Troops and Fellow Americans,
As I sit here in my home office, I find it difficult to express myself in the written word. I am here enjoying all this Country has to offer and it's all because of the sacrifices of you incredibly brave people and those who proceeded you in our Armed Services. I wanted you all to know that my neighborhood has American Flags displayed and we wear "Old Glory" pins. There are no "Wage Peace" demonstrations here, but they would be tolerated only because American Troops have fought to guarantee these rights to all. Stay alert and focused so you may all return to a Hero's welcome. The most I can give you at this time is my prayers and I do so with as much pride as I can muster.
Your legacy will be that of a group of Americans giving all they have to liberate an oppressed people. Stay true to your Heart and Oaths. God Bless you all from me and my family.

Thank you with all of my heart for what you are doing for our country. There are no words to adequately describe how proud we are of you. You can be assured that when you come home, you will be welcomed by me and my family as well as millions of Americans as heroes and nothing we can ever do will be enough to repay you for all you have sacrificed.
Mary Ann Williams

--

I just want all of you to know, we the United States of America are very proud of all that you are doing to help free a people that have been under the rule of an evil man. You are doing a job that most of the world does not want. Yet, as Americans, it has, and probably always will come to us to help the needy, suppressed people of our world. I cannot imagine what you are going through over there. I do know that God is quite able to see you through all that you have to go through. Once again, I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for volunteering as free Americans to help an oppressed people to rid themselves of this tyrant. God be with you all.

My family are indeed very proud that you have volunteered to serve and fight for our Country and all it stands for. There are always those who will never understand. Do not let those who talk- the- talk but never walk- the-walk
deter you from your mission. You are truly the dedicated Americans. Stay focused, function as you are trained, lookout for your Buddy, and REMEMBER we support your service and dedication to our country. We who have gone on before you, will take care of the dissenters. We ARE Very Proud of You and your service to our Country.

Dear Troops,
I want to express my sincere gratitude for all that you wonderful men and women do both in times of trouble and in times of peace. I wish I could accurately reflect in words what I feel about each one of you, but the English language does not contain the words which could convey such sentiment. This may seem strange considering that I am a Canadian, but I had the privilege of living in the USA. One day I hope to return. I apologise for the position the Canadian government has taken and the lack of support. Please know that you are thought of often and I will pray for all of you.
God Bless You All,

To ALL who serve, particularly in Iraq. You are thought of consistently. You are admired. You are appreciated. You have the very sincere thanks and total support of the family of which I am just a small part. Don't ever doubt that the good folks of the greatest country in the world don't support you 100%.

9/11/2001, I sat in front of a television screen for fourteen hours, in shock. I watched as the towers fell. I watched as the pentagon was hit. I barely moved from my spot. I listened to the news reports, I listened to the President. I talked to my son as he watched the sky for air traffic flying below radar. I waited. I didn't wonder what to do, I didn't cry, I didn't get fighting mad, I sat, stunned.
My daughter watched too. That afternoon she asked me for her assignments for the day. My response was to sit in front of the television. She asked again later, my response was to sit, in front of the television. My daughter wrote this poem that day.
The Flag
It stands for our country
When nobody will, it sings
Out a Song when nobody can,
It calls out the names of
People we love, of Army
And Navy, of Coast Guard,
Air Force, and Marines.
It calls out the names of heroes we know
Presidents and Generals,
Winners and losers, living
And dead.
Written by Charlotte Mikus
Now, many months later, we are at war. I watched the television, listened to the news report, called my family. I turned off the television, kissed my daughter and went to bed. I catch up on what is going on by hearing the reports on the radio, reading the headlines on line and in the news paper.
My daughter helped me to see. Living life doesn't mean not caring. Going on with our lives doesn't mean not understanding. Our flag will stand for our country, our soldiers will fight for our flag, our leaders will keep the flag flying high. I will teach my child, love my family, honor my God and support our country.

From a Vietnam Veteran to my brothers and sisters in the Armed Forces serving their Country in Iraq. I know what you are going thru and facing day to day. My prayers and thoughts are with you daily. Death and destruction of war makes me sad, but I don't turn my back on reality. Your memories will be with you for the rest of your life, good and bad. Be diligent, safe, stay positive and take care of those around you. You have great support from your fellow Americans. God Bless and God Speed to you all. You will be welcomed home as the brave hero's you are.
